For many pets managing their weight through their diet is really the best and sometimes only option. Obesity is such a big problem in both cats and dogs that a surprisingly large number of our pets should be maintained on a weight loss diet. Weight loss specific diets are not simply lower-calorie or lower-fat. The better, more-researched diets generally have a higher protein-to-carbohydrate ratio and additional nutrients to promote and support healthy weight loss.
In many pets, simply restricting the volume they’re fed can significantly decrease their quality of life (and yours if they’re trying to wake you up at 3 am for food). Additionally, it’s important to remember that if you’re halving the amount of food with the goal of halving their calorie intake this also results in halving all of the nutrients.
