In patients who have been vomiting or having diarrhea, an important part of their recovery is to provide nutritional support that will not contribute to further inflammation and irritation of the gastrointestinal tract. Whatever treatment protocol is started for vomiting and diarrhea it is very important to follow some simple guidelines when food is reintroduced. The basic principle is to feed small amounts of low fat, easily digestible foods, frequently. We usually will suggest either a prepared food such as PVD EN formula, Medi Cal Gastro or Hills id, or you can prepare a diet yourself at home. If you choose to home cook, you can make up a larger batch of food and keep it refrigerated to feed over 2-3 days. The recipe is very simple: boil lean ground beef or chicken and pour off the water and any rendered fat, mix this with an equal amount of boiled plain rice. For each cup of mixture add one tablespoon of cottage cheese.
Whether you choose a prepared diet or home made, you should divide the amount normally fed in a day into 5 or 6 smaller amounts and feed these spaced out through the day.
Once the problem is resolved, you can start gradually reintroducing your pets original diet by mixing it in to the recovery diet over a few days.
