Dr. Nigel Skinner purchased Kew Beach Veterinary Hospital in July of 2007. Prior to that, he had been an associate at two other GTA clinics, Lawrence Veterinary Clinic and Warden Animal Hospital. Originally from New Zealand, Nigel arrived in Canada in 1992. Nigel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto and is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario. Nigel’s professional interests include laparoscopy and endoscopy (minimally invasive surgery), pediatrics, and anesthesia and pain management.
Dr. Karissa Ali hails from Trinidad where she originally did her Veterinary training. She moved to Toronto in 2009 and after receiving her accreditation in Canada, we were thrilled to have her join the Kew Beach Team. Karissa has a special interest in Internal medicine.
Dr Lisa Cohen is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. Lisa took advantage of her summers by traveling and volunteering overseas. From a Dog and Cat Rescue and an Elephant Nature Park in two different parts of Thailand to Vet Clinics in both Australia and New Zealand to help both small and farm animals in Nicaragua; Lisa has definitely had many unique interactions with animals around the world.
Amy had been working as an esthetician since 2006, but her passion and love for animals since childhood led her to explore a new career change.
Caitlin graduated from Queen’s University and began working in marketing. After spending some time in the marketing world she had an epiphany one day and realized that working with animals had become her calling. She attended Seneca College for their Veterinary Technician program and hasn’t looked back. Caitlin loves the fast-paced, intense and unpredictable environment that working at a veterinary clinic provides.
We were so happy to have Julia join the Kew Beach team in March of 2017. Julia came to us with a varied background and education. She has a Diploma in Agriculture/Equine Studies from Kemptville Campus- University of Guelph. Julia also graduated from the Veterinary Technician program at Algonquin College and was an RVT at Toronto Humane Society for 7 years. Julia has participated in a two week trip to Northern fly in reservations to spay and neuter dogs as well as trained in high volume spays/neuters with the Humane Alliance in North Carolina. Julia loves living in the Beach neighborhood and often spends her weekends riding horses which is one of her passions.
Monica is the newest member of our team. Originally from Ireland, she has been living in Canada for 10 years and we are lucky to have her!
Monica has a degree in Social Science from University College Cork in Ireland. Three years after arriving in Canada and doing a few different jobs she realized that she wanted to return to her true passion which was working with animals.
Monica graduated from Seneca College’s RVT program and has been working ever since. Monica lives in downtown Toronto with her husband and their black cat Edwin.
Briana has been working in the field of veterinary care since graduating from the Vet Assisting program at Durham College in 2014. This program was perfect for Briana as she was able to combine her love of science with her passion for animals!
Christina comes to us after graduating from Concordia University. After working at a no-kill shelter in Montreal, Christina decided to stay in the animal care field and moved to Toronto in 2012. Christina has worked at a few different vet clinics over the years and is very happy to have landed at Kew Beach.
Michelle is a Toronto native who has worked with animals since she was 15 years old. She did a co op in high school which led to her first job in a Veterinary clinic and she knew that’s where she wanted to stay.
She worked at a few different clinics and eventually worked at a emergency/referral hospital where she gained a lot of valuable experience that she has carried forward with her in her career.
Michelle lives with her dog Casper and would love to see working with wildlife and world travel in her future. For now, we’re very happy to have her on the Kew Beach team!
Olivia is proud to be Toronto born and raised! She is currently attending Ryerson University and is studying Urban and Regional Planning.
Ashley joined the Kew Beach team in September 2017 after her maternity leave and she has been a fabulous addition to our team. She started in the veterinary industry nine years ago after completing a Specialist Degree in English Communications from The University of Toronto. Ashley lives in the Beaches with her husband, two year old daughter Charlotte and dog Winston. In her spare time she enjoys heading up to the family cottage in Buckhorn, or walking the boardwalk with her family!
Originally from England, Sharon grew up in Toronto. After 25 years in the radio industry, she experienced a major lifestyle change. This led to the coming together of a new career, her passion for animals and the amazing opportunity to join the KBVH team. Sharon, a self-proclaimed Beacher, rescued a 9-year-old Himalayan lap cat. Leilani’s name comes from Sharon’s penchant for all things Hawaiian. She dedicates her spare time to fundraising for animal charities and uses her special connection to cats as a Feline Enrichment Volunteer at the Toronto Humane Society.
Krista comes to us with years of experience as she has worked in the Veterinary field since she was 18 years old. Krista considers herself to be quite the cat lady having grown up with cats her whole life but she loves all animals!
Krista has worked in a variety of clinics including an emergency clinic, in a few different capacities, but realized that what she enjoys most is interacting with both human owners and their pets. This realization (luckily for us!) led her to Client Care.
Krista lives in the Beach community with her husband, three cats and one rabbit.
After the sad passing of Spooky (who has been our clinic cat for many years) we all had a cat-shaped hole in our hearts. We were so happy to have Gaston come through our doors from Team Cat Rescue. Although we continuously work with many Team Cat Rescue cats who have needed homes, our team saw something special in Gaston. We decided to see how he would work out as a clinic cat as it really does take a certain cat personality type for the environment to work. We are thrilled to say that things have been going swimmingly with Gaston and it feels like he has always been part of the Kew Beach Family. If you see him when you come in feel free to give him a pet, but not a treat :) as apparently he has had a few too many in his lifetime and he is determined to cut back, at least for a little while. :)
