Intestinal Parasites in Cats


Intestinal parasites are a very common problem in our pets. We recommend routine testing of all puppies and kittens, as well as at least yearly testing of all adult pets, particularly dogs and outdoor cats.

Most intestinal parasites are checked for by analysis of feces. We send all of our fecal samples to a reference laboratory rather than run them “in house”. The technicians at the lab are much more likely to catch the various parasite eggs and cysts present in the feces of infected animals. Our lab will also run an ELISA test for the most common intestinal parasite we see, Giardia. This parasite is notoriously difficult to detect on routine microscopic examination of feces.
